VoterIQ ("the app", "we", "us") is a nonpartisan civic information app operated by SIIEA. It helps you find your ballot, learn about candidates and representatives, locate polling places, and understand how to register and vote. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
| Data | When & why |
|---|---|
| Address (street address you type) | Used to look up your voting districts, ballot, candidates, and the nearest polling place. You enter it manually — the app never reads your device location. If you are not signed in, your address stays only on your device. If you sign in, it may be saved to your account so you can return to your ballot. |
| Email address and password | Only if you choose to create an account (optional). Passwords are stored as a salted hash (bcrypt) — we never store or see your plaintext password. |
| AI chat messages | Questions you type into the AI ballot guide, plus your address for context, are sent to our AI provider to generate an answer. Don't include sensitive personal details in chats. |
| Follows & reminders | The politicians, states, or parties you choose to follow, and election reminders you opt into, so we can show your alerts and notify you of relevant updates. |
| Data | When & why |
|---|---|
| Push notification token | If you enable notifications, your device's Expo push token and platform (iOS/Android) are stored so we can deliver election reminders and alerts you've opted into. You can turn notifications off in your device settings at any time. |
| Basic technical/log data | Our servers record standard request information (e.g. IP address, request time, and endpoint) for security, rate-limiting, and debugging. These logs are retained for a limited period and are not used to build advertising profiles. |
| Anonymous usage analytics | We use privacy-first, cookieless analytics (Umami, self-hosted on our own servers) to count visits and understand which features are used — for example page views and ballot searches. It sets no cookies, does not track you across other websites, does not collect personal information, and is never sold or shared with third parties. The data is aggregate only. |
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it.
We share data only with the service providers needed to deliver civic information, and only the minimum required:
| Provider | What is shared | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Google Civic Information API | Your address | Resolve your voting districts and ballot. |
| Mapbox | Your address | Geocode the address to show it on the polling-place map. |
| AI provider (Groq) | Your chat messages + address | Generate AI ballot-guide answers. |
| Expo (push notifications) | Push token | Deliver notifications you opt into. |
| OpenStates, Ballotpedia, Wikipedia | No personal data | Read-only public candidate/legislator information. |
We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights and safety of our users and the public.
If you create an account, we keep your account data until you delete your account or request deletion. Address data tied to your account is retained to power your saved ballot until you remove it or delete your account. Server logs are kept only for a limited operational period. If you use the app without an account, your address is not stored on our servers beyond the live request needed to answer it.
We use industry-standard measures including encrypted transport (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and encrypted on-device storage for authentication tokens. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
VoterIQ is intended for eligible and prospective voters and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, an in-app notice.
